Whakatane sits in the spectacular Eastern Bay of Plenty of New Zealand, right beside the Pacific Ocean.
These warm waters are world famous for incredible deep-sea fishing, marine sports, whale watching, dolphin swimming and much more.
On land there are a host of bush walks and bike trails, bird spotting, beach activities and sightseeing tours to enjoy.
Moutohora Tours
Moutohorā/Whale Island is a pest-free oasis that is home to several New Zealand's rare and endangered plants, birds and reptiles. Keep an eye out for a threatened tūturiwhatu/New Zealand dotterel, boisterous tīeke/North Island saddleback, Tuatara, or kākāriki/red-crowned parakeet as you journey through the regenerated native bush before you dig yourself a soothing geothermal spring pool at Onepū Bay, Moutohorā's secluded hot water beach. This is your opportunity to see New Zealand's wildlife as nature intended it and shows what can be achieved when a concentrated effort on conservation is made, managed, and protected.
Kiwi Capital of the World
Whakatane enjoys the unique opportunity of enjoying the beloved but endangered national bird – the kiwi. There is no other large urban centre in New Zealand that has a kiwi territory in such close proximity. Kiwi calls can often be heard and some residents whose properties face the reserve sometime see kiwis foraging in their garden at night. The Whakatane Kiwi Trust work tirelessly to support this unique bird species at risk.
Nga Tapuwae o Toi Walkway
Located directly behind the hotel, take in stunning views of Whakatane whilst walking one of the Nga Taouwae o Toi walkways. These scenic tracks through stunning native bush will bring you close to nature, with seabird colonies and native birds, Pohutukawa stands and plantation forest and unforgettable views over water and land. Also take a walk through history and visit ancient pa sites (Maori villages). There are 4 tracks, each ranging from 1-3 hours in length.
